Climate change is not a lie! Do not let our planet die!

Hi everybody! In this post we're going to be talking about climate change (April's cause).

Did you know:

  • Air pollution kills 9 million people every year!
  • We are losing 1.2 trillion tons of ice every year - that's almost the same weight as everything man-made on earth..
  • If we do something about it, it is possible to reverse some of the effects of global warming

Some of the things humans are doing that is causing climate change are:

  • Using plastic, because it takes hundreds and thousands of years to decompose, and if it gets into the ocean then sea life eats it, thinking its food, and then they get sick. Sometimes humans eat the fish, and the humans get ill too.
  • Mining for oil and burning coal, because it releases carbon dioxide, and this is like a big blanket over the earth, making it hotter, which then melts the ice, which then makes the sea levels rise.
  • Our 'fast fashion' lifestyles - like when some people buy one outfit for one occasion, and clothes aren't made to last very long so we buy more. This is a problem because when you make clothes, it takes up a lot of energy, it's burning oil and coal. The clothes are made with really cheap, sometimes plastic, material, and the clothes don't last long but the plastic takes ages to properly decompose. Because the clothes don't last for long before they start wearing out and ripping, you throw them away and then you just get more, and the process repeats.

This all makes the world heat up, and the sea levels rise, so our planet is dying, and we are causing it. We made this mess, so we should be the ones to put it back to how it was.

How can we help? Here are some of my ideas:

  • Buy clothes that are made to last for longer. Find a shop that you know is going to sell long-lasting clothes, or buy from a charity shop.
  • When you grow out of clothes, or you don't want them anymore, you can donate them to a charity shop, or just give them to a friend.
  • Tell your friends and family about what's going on, so that they can start doing this too!
  • A while ago I was walking in the shops and I looked at all of the food, and I saw it was all uselessly wrapped up in mounds and mounds of plastic. There was more plastic than food! It doesn't need to be plastic, it could be cardboard, which easily decomposes.
  • Try not to buy things with too much plastic wrapping. Remember it takes hundreds of years to decompose. Some companies have purposefully started using eco-wrapping: look out for those and support them.

Give me your ideas, if I've missed anything - comment below. I hope this post helps spread the word a bit, and in my next post I'll be looking in to some other ways that we're causing climate change.

Thank you,

  1. On the subject of clothing. My mother (and Nana) used to make clothes for us to wear. When they were getting old, they would be taken apart and remade into ‘new’ items. The world has got too used to discarding things (toys, clothing, phones etc) and somehow that process could be reversed so that we place more value on things that we own. Consequently we would be less of a throwaway society. It will not be easy and will take a long time perhaps but it could be a worthy goal to aim for๐Ÿ˜ธ๐Ÿ˜ธ๐Ÿ˜ธ

    1. wow that's cool! It will take a while, but hopefully we'll get there in the end.๐Ÿ™‚

  2. I’d never really thought about how much clothes are linked to climate change before - you’ve got some really good tips for reducing our impact
