My home is melting!
Hi everyone, sorry I have been a bit quiet but I've been on holiday. I'm now back home and wanted to do another blog post about climate change. This one is about one particular biome that I think we should do more to preserve. (A biome is a habitat, an area with a similar climate and landscape. There's lots of different types. Today we'll be looking into the ice biome).
What human processes are affecting the ice biome?
Humans burning oil and mining all around the world releases greenhouse gas into the air, which makes the whole atmosphere hotter. The heat melts the ice in the ice biome. The water from the ice goes into the sea, which means there is more water, so the sea levels rise, and there's less land.
(Not fun) fact:
If emissions continue to rise unchecked, the Arctic could be ice-free in the summer by 2040.
But this is all going on outside the biome. There's also stuff going on inside the biome that damages it. For example - humans building roads and villages damages the land.
Why do humans do these things?
Humans burn oil and fossil fuels for the energy, to make things, build things, move around (petrol for cars, fuel for planes).
What will happen if we don't protect the biome?
We need to help this biome because if we kill this biome, we are basically killing ourselves, as the sea levels rise and we get more extreme weather all over the world.
The ice biome is home for many animals, such as polar bears, walruses, arctic foxes, snowy owls, reindeer, and many other species. As the ice melts, their home disappears and they die. As they are affected, so too are the other species that depend on them, in addition to people.
What is already being done to protect the biome, and what else can we do to help?
There are lots of charities and people that are raising awareness about the issue (like this blog!).
Raising awareness is important, because if everyone stops using so much energy, everyone is saved.
Thank you and bye,

This is an excellent post Meadow Joy, really makes you think about what we are doing to our world.
